MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership conducts research into the importance and effects of mentoring relationships on young people.

THE POWER OF RELATIONSHIPS

With the release of this comprehensive new report, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership has provided the field with important new data about the scope of mentoring in the United States.

OVERVIEW

This guide was made possible thanks to AT&T for their generous support of the survey and for their interest in understanding how adults come to mentoring roles, and they ways in which corporations and business can do their part to increase mentoring engagement across the nation

This report advances our understanding in several important ways. First, it moves beyond a simple head count to explore Americans’ motivations for, obstacles to, and beliefs about mentoring. Second, unlike the many surveys that focus on youth’s perspectives, this study explores the perspectives of adult mentors (as well as adults who do not mentor).

THE MENTORING EFFECT

The report that follows includes the results of the first-ever, nationally representative survey of young people’s perspectives on mentoring. Core to our collective work is the fundamental belief that children and adolescents should receive the supports they need and deserve — including consistent and caring relationships with adults. By asking 18- to 21-yearolds across the country to share their opinions on and experiences with mentoring, they shared their realities with us: while the mentoring needs of our young people are not being fully met, for those with quality mentors, there is a powerful effect on their life trajectory.

OVERVIEW

This guide was made possible thanks to MENTOR in collaboration with its Mentoring Partnership Network, which works to drive the investment of time and money into high impact mentoring programs and advance quality mentoring through the development and delivery of standards, cuttingedge research and state-of-the-art tools.
